How to Do Medicals for Australian Visas

One of the criteria applicants need to satisfy is the health requirement before a decision is made on the visa application lodged.  You may be asked by the department to undergo a medical check to demonstrate that the health requirement is met.

Making arrangements to go for a medical check for immigration purposes may involve a few steps and procedures, and may take a few weeks to be completed.  To avoid further delays, if required, you can complete your health examinations before lodging your visa application via the My Health Declarations.

Health examination while in Australia

If the application is lodged while you are in Australia, you must arrange your health examinations with the migration medical services provider and have your examinations processed online using the eMedical system.  Bupa Medical Visa Services is currently the migration medical services provider.  You can use their online booking tool available through their website, or by telephoning 1300 794 919.  Locations and fees associated with the medical examination shall be provided.

Health examination outside Australia

If you are applying from overseas, you must arrange your health examinations with an accredited Panel Physician.

To locate the closest panel physician, check the list of Panel Physicians on DIBP website.
Panel physicians are now able to process your health examinations online using eMedical system in over 100 countries.  If booking for an appointment, health identifier (HAP ID) must be provided.  Panel clinics will expect clients who have lodged an online visa application to have completed the eMedical Client process online before attending their appointment.

Visa application already lodged

DIBP will determine whether health examinations are required.  A HAP ID shall be provided and request that you undergo health examinations.  You will then need to access eMedical Client to consent to eMedical processing and complete your medical history.  Once done, you need to download your eMedical Referral Letter.

You make an appointment with an approved panel clinic or the migration medical services provider and provide your HAP ID.  During the medical examination, you need to present the eMedical Referral Letter.  The Panel Physician and/or radiologist submits the result to the department directly.  If you meet the health requirement, your visa record is updated and processing can continue.  Take note that you need not use My Health Declarations if your visa application has already been lodged to DIBP.

Visa application has not yet been lodged

Make sure that you have read and fully understood the information provided on the My Health Declaration support page before booking for a health check.  This will enable you to check if it is appropriate for you to complete health examinations prior to lodging your visa application.

Once the health declaration is submitted online, it will be determined whether or not you need to go for a medical examination.  You will then be redirected to eMedical Client to complete the medical history.  An eMedical Reference Letter will then be generated which you should take with you once you have booked for your medical with an accredited panel clinic or migration medical services provider.  The clinic locates your case in eMedical using the HAP ID.  Additional steps will be required if a significant health condition is identified during immigration health examinations.

You will not be advised of your results until after you have lodged a visa application. If a significant health condition is identified by a Medical Officer of the Commonwealth as part of the immigration health assessment process, a final opinion on your case will also not be provided until you have lodged a visa application.
