Government Forms Global Business and Talent Attraction Taskforce

In a bid to accelerate job generation, the government formed Global Business and Talent Attraction Taskforce, made up of experts from the Commonwealth, States, Territories, and the private sector.

Part of the JobMaker plan, the task force will operate to entice high-value global enterprises and exceptionally talented individuals to work or set up business in Australia.

Acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs Alan Tudge said Australia has always been an attractive destination given its relative success economically, socially and from a health perspective.

The initiative works in combination with the Global Talent and Business Innovation and Investment programs.

The focus will be given to the following sectors: advanced manufacturing, financial services (including Fintech) and health.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Simon Birmingham said that the initiative will help bring additional business nous and new technologies to grow and develop high-value goods and services in the emerging industries, resulting in more jobs and opportunities for Australians.

The Taskforce will be headed by senior business leader, Peter Verwer AO. He is also appointed as Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Global Business and Talent Attraction. He will be joined by the Department of Home Affairs with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade). Other departments are also tapped to lend their expertise: Treasury, the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, Defence, and the Department of Education, Skills and Employment.

Innes Willox, Chief Executive of the national employer association Ai, applaud the Taskforce. She said the initiative will help in addressing the skills gap crisis and they look forward to contributing to Taskforce’s work.
